Instagram Attribution: Tie Followers, DMs and Clicks to Revenue
Track which Instagram posts, DMs and links turn into signups and sales. A practical setup with UTM links, DM tagging and a weekly revenue review.

Short answer: Instagram attribution means giving every way in (bio link, Story links, DM links, ads) its own tagged URL, recording that source when someone signs up or pays, and reviewing revenue by source every week. Without attribution, follower count is the only number you see. With it, you know which posts and conversations make money, and you can do more of them.
Why followers aren't the metric
Followers measure attention. Revenue comes from a chain: reach → profile visit → click or DM → signup → payment. Attribution tells you where that chain breaks. Most growth services sell the first link only. Look at how the plans in our pricing comparison are described: almost all of them lead with follower ranges.
Step 1: Map your entry points
List every place someone can leave Instagram for your site:
- Bio link
- Story link stickers
- Links sent in DMs
- Comment-to-DM replies
- Paid ads
Step 2: Tag every link
Add UTM parameters so your analytics tool can tell sources apart:
utm_source=instagramutm_medium=bio,story,dmoradutm_campaign=a short name for the campaign or offer
Keep a single sheet listing every tagged link so names stay consistent.
Step 3: Capture the source at signup and payment
Store the first-touch source with the user record when they sign up, and copy it onto the payment. That turns "visits from Instagram" into "revenue from Instagram."
Step 4: Attribute DMs
Conversations convert, but they're the easiest thing to lose track of. Use a separate tagged link for each DM campaign, or tag the contact when the conversation starts.
Step 4b: Tag Reels separately
Reels often bring the most new reach, so give Reels-driven links and DM campaigns their own utm_campaign values. That way you can see whether video reach turns into revenue. More in Instagram Reels strategy that drives signups.
Step 5: Review weekly
Every week, look at revenue by source and campaign. Put more effort into the entry points that pay and cut the ones that don't. We don't publish benchmark conversion rates. Your own numbers are the only ones that count.
How InstaGrowth automates this
InstaGrowth's attribution agent links targeting, content, DM outreach and engagement activity to signups and sales, so you can see which actions grow revenue. [TODO: confirm exactly what the attribution agent tracks and integrates with]

Frequently asked questions
How do I track sales from Instagram?
Give every Instagram entry point (bio link, Story links, DM links, ads) its own tagged URL, record the source when someone signs up or buys, and review revenue by source every week.
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to a URL, such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, that analytics tools read to report where a visit came from.
Can I attribute DM conversations?
Yes. Send a unique tagged link per DM campaign, or log the campaign on the contact when the conversation starts, so a later signup can be traced back to it.
