Instagram Not Working? Diagnose the Problem by Symptom (2026)
A symptom-by-symptom guide to common Instagram problems (login, posting, restricted actions, missing reach) with legitimate fixes and where to get official help.
· InstaGrowth Team
Short answer: start by working out whose problem it is: your device, your network, or your account. Device and network problems usually clear up after you update the app, switch networks or restart. Account problems (security checks, restricted actions, disabled features) need you to secure the account, stop whatever triggered it, and use Instagram's own in-app review options. This guide doesn't cover workarounds, because Meta prohibits evading enforcement.
Source note: Instagram's Help Center (help.instagram.com) returned 403 to our fetcher on 2026-10-16. Where we'd normally link to it, we cite Meta Help Center and Transparency Center pages that did load, and we tell you to check the in-app Help section.
Who this is for
Creators and businesses whose Instagram account is misbehaving, especially after connecting a third-party tool.
Step 0: Is it you or everyone?
- Switch networks (Wi-Fi ↔ mobile data).
- Update the Instagram app, or try instagram.com in a browser.
- Try a second device you've used before.
- Check whether one action fails (for example, commenting) or everything does.
If it works on another device or network, the problem is local. If it fails everywhere, treat it as an account problem.
Diagnose by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area | What to do | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asked to confirm it's you, or logged out unexpectedly | Account security | Check where you're logged in, change your password, turn on 2FA in Accounts Center | Login, 2FA and checkpoint problems |
| "Action blocked" or "Try again later" | Restricted action | Stop the action, pause tools, wait, and use the in-app report option if it's a mistake | Instagram action blocked |
| Can't post or upload | Device, network or file | Update the app, check your connection and storage, try a different file | Check in-app Help |
| Reach suddenly drops | Content or account status | If your app shows an Account Status page, check it; review recent changes and any tools you use | Reels strategy |
| DMs not sending | Restricted action or limits | Slow down; don't send the same message repeatedly | DM outreach playbook |
Account settings that matter
Meta says Accounts Center's Password and security section is where you manage "your password, two-factor authentication, login alerts, login activity, and where you're logged in" (Meta Help Center, fetched 2026-10-16).
When a tool is involved
Pause the tool before you troubleshoot. Meta's Spam policy says it "may place restrictions on accounts that are acting at lower frequencies when other indicators of Spam (e.g., posting repetitive content) or signals of inauthenticity are present" (transparency.meta.com, fetched 2026-10-16). Before reconnecting anything, use the policy-first checklist.
What we won't recommend
New accounts to get around a restriction, location or device spoofing, or "unblock" services. Meta's Inauthentic Behavior policy (fetched 2026-10-16) prohibits using inauthentic assets "to evade enforcement under the Community Standards."

Frequently asked questions
What should I check first when Instagram stops working?
Work out whether the problem affects only you or everyone: try another network and device, update the app, and check whether a specific action or your whole account is affected. Account-level problems need the steps in Accounts Center and Instagram's own help channels.
Can a growth tool cause Instagram problems?
It can. Tools that act on your account may trigger security checks or restrictions. Meta's Spam policy says it may restrict accounts when signals of spam or inauthenticity are present (transparency.meta.com, fetched 2026-10-16).
Is there a way to get around an Instagram restriction?
We don't give workaround or evasion advice. Meta's Inauthentic Behavior policy prohibits using inauthentic accounts to evade enforcement. Use the in-app options, wait out time-limited restrictions, and follow Instagram's review process.
